Climate Justice Saskatoon appeals to Saskatchewan’s highest court to uphold our Charter rights
Climate Justice Saskatoon (CJS), alongside seven Saskatchewan citizens, are appealing to allow their claims to be heard by the Court. In October 2025, the Court of King’s bench struck down our case on the grounds that it was “not justiciable.” We disagree. We will be arguing that our case deserves a full hearing on merits at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in Regina on April 17, 2026.
Our main point: the Government of Saskatchewan should not harm its citizens by making dangerous climate change worse. It’s a fact: SaskPower’s ongoing construction of new fossil gas generating stations will cause additional GHG emissions and accelerate dangerous climate change. This specific government action violates our Charter rights to life, security of person, and equality rights for various demographic groups in Saskatchewan.
The Legislature and executive branches of the Saskatchewan government have known for decades that we must reduce GHG emissions. Saskatchewan politicians have not reduced our emissions significantly to date. Instead, we get nothing but “hot air,” empty promises, and a Premier who states that he “doesn’t care” about our per capita emissions. Even our opposition politicians voted unanimously with the government to break the law and refuse to collect GHG pollution prices in Saskatchewan. We need the judicial branch of government to weigh in and consider this important case. Climate change is an “existential threat” and our legislative and executive branches of government have been ineffective at reducing emissions for far too long. Desperate citizens are turning to the Courts for justice, and Climate Justice Saskatoon is urging the Court to hear our calls.
The bottom line: Building new fossil fuel power generation puts all of us, our climate, and our economy at serious risk.

We ask that our members, as well as the public, attend our hearing in court in solidarity with our cause. Come witness the rule of law in action as we advocate to protect the rights of present and future generations.
