In 2023, Canada experienced its worst wildfire season on record, with massive blazes sweeping across the country, blanketing cities in hazardous smoke, and displacing communities. This year forest fires continued and as of today over 5.3 million hectares have burned in Canada. (If you want the most recent information on fire statistics see CIFFC.) The effects of these fires were felt in Saskatchewan, as events like forest fires are becoming more frequent and severe due to the climate crisis. The impacts of these fires highlight a stark reality: climate justice is not just about policy—it’s about protecting the health and well-being of our communities, our ecosystems, and future generations.
This fall, Climate Justice Saskatoon (CJS) is running a digital billboard campaign from October 1 to November 30 at five different locations across Saskatoon.

Our ad, which reads: “Smokin’ Hot Summers Aren’t What They Used to Be. Sask has the Power to Change,” is a call to action for our community to confront the reality of climate change and demand accountability from SaskPower and the Saskatchewan provincial government for their role in fuelling the climate crisis. Please consider donating to support this message!
Why Wildfires and Smoke Matter in the Fight for Climate Justice
Wildfires not only devastate forests and wildlife but also impact human health by releasing harmful pollutants into the air. Smoke from these fires can cause respiratory issues, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. Extreme heat, prolonged droughts, and unsustainable land management are all contributing to the increased frequency and intensity of wildfires—issues that are directly linked to climate change.
The recent surge in wildfires underscores the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for just, immediate action. It’s not just about mitigating carbon emissions—it’s about ensuring that those most impacted by climate change, including marginalized communities and Indigenous groups, are not left behind.
Saskatchewan Has the Power to Change
